Just after Edmund tells the White Witch that his siblings are at the
Beavers' house, the White Witch sends her wolves after them. The wolves
go howling off into the woods. Their howls give Peter, Susan, Lucy, and
the Beavers enough warning to escape. Mrs. Beaver even has time to pack
some snacks! Why didn't the White Witch or Maugrim (The wolf leader)
order the wolves to stay silent so that they could catch their prey by
surprise?

I believe to give an example of the self-defeating stupidy of evil, plus
"moving the plot along".

The terror of the WW is enhanced by her dispatching a pack of howling
wolves after her enemies, but this very arrogance of the wolves giving
voice (so sure are they of their prey) warns P, S, L etc. If they had
done as you suggest, the movie would have ended very differently. The WW
would have killed all the Pevensies, the thrones would remain empty, and
evil would have triumphed in Narnia.

Rather as though the Nazis had successfully beaten off the Allies on
D-Day and had managed to hold on to Northern Europe to this day. Not our
world, and impossible for many reasons, not the least of which is this
same ultimate stupidity of evil.

Maugrim was head of the Secret Police. He should therefore understand the
need to stay silent when pursuing very important prey! Members of the
Secret Police should not be announcing their arrivals to the entire world!

It's a children's story about good and evil (more accurately the film version
of a children's book), and such realistic considerations would be as out of
place in the LWW movie as a real discussion of the nature of the various
European monarchies would in the latest video remake of the *Alice* books
(instead of just "Off with his head!"). Not quite to the point, mate, see?
